Summer Camp

Summer Camp

We know the value of a smile at the end of the day. It's a small reminder of why we teach kids climbing. It's because learning to climb is fun, and because it encourages learning general life skills that can be applied every day. Our Summer Rock Climbing Camp doesn't set out to make kids all-star rock climbers but rather helps kids find ways to...

  • Solve problems
  • Make good decisions
  • Act as team players
  • Learn respect for others
  • Enjoy physical recreation and the outdoors, and
  • Do something healthy for their growing bodies.
Sportrock’s five-day curriculum introduces children to rock climbing, both indoors and out.  Kids will learn knot craft, belaying technique and basic climbing technique.  Our indoor gym allows us to better control the climate and the terrain thereby enhancing the learning atmosphere and ensuring that each child receives all the attention, guidance and instruction they need and deserve.
Once they have learned those skills, they will travel outside to Great Falls, VA.  The outdoor class is a day of fun and adventure as our instructors guide the kids on and around real rock, learning to climb on it, and how it got there and how to preserve it for future generations.

A brief look at the week's exciting activities for campers:

  • Identify each child's needs and goals
  • Acquire basic climbing safety skills
  • Participate in group team-building games to encourage trust
  • Instruction in the basic skills of top roping
  • How to engage, or contact, the climbing surface
  • Learn movement skills used for climbing
  • Gain knowledge about different types of rock and its geology
  • Have fun climbing!

What Our Instructors Know

Our instructors know that camp is a great time for kids to learn about themselves and those around them. They know that building trust is a huge responsibility, and it's one they take seriously. Whether it's managing safety systems or teaching children new skills, they are dedicated to ensuring that no matter what the day may bring everyone is comfortable.

In addition to being experienced climbers, our instructors are also trained in the care of children. This translates to people who are prepared for all types of situations. They are versed in accident prevention measures and emergency procedures, possess First Aid and CPR certifications with lead outdoor instructors additionally certified as American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA) Top Rope Instructors.
